The School of English at the University of Sheffield have just published this year’s edition of Route 57, an online creative writing magazine under the shared editorship of various staff and students working on different sections: poetry, short fiction, non-fiction, experimental and drama.
This year I have published a very short piece of non-fiction entitled ‘Big Dog’. It tells the story of my walk to the tram-stop from my home in Hillsborough. Each day I look for a large Newfoundland dog who sits in a driveway watching the world go by. I’ve often paused to watch my fellow commuters interact with him, and I often imagine what it’s like for him, sitting behind his iron gate.
Big thanks go to Matt Cheeseman, Andrew Tildesley and Sabina Wantoch for taking care of ‘Big Dog’ through the editing and review process. And big congratulations to the team behind Route 57, and all its student editors and contributors, for putting together such a vibrant collection of new writing.
